Your Excellency President Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa, Distinguished Colleagues and Your Spouses,

It is so nice to be with you, my old friends and good friends from Africa, here this evening, as we open the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation. To begin with, let me express, on behalf of the Chinese government and people, and on behalf of my wife and in my own name, a very warm welcome to all of you.

Twelve years ago, the leaders of China and Africa met here in Beijing for an occasion to renew friendship and chart the course for future cooperation. Twelve years later, we are meeting here in this great gathering to reaffirm our commitment and open up new horizon for cooperation. Over the past 12 years, despite the fast changing international landscape, China-Africa relations have enjoyed sound and rapid growth. I believe I speak for all of us when I say that our exchanges at different levels are increasingly closer, our cooperation across the board is getting more robust, the big family of China-Africa friendship has grown in strength, and the future of our peoples are closely linked as never before.

Today, the African dimensions in China and Chinese dimensions in Africa, which are perfectly cut out for one another, could be found in various aspects of China-Africa interactions. I am particularly glad to note that people-to-people exchanges between the Chinese and Africans are flourishing. Young Chinese and African students mingle on Chinese campuses, and Chinese and African doctors work together to save lives in rural and urban Africa. African songs and dances, particularly the beats of tam tam drum, delight Chinese audience; and Chinese artists enchant African viewers with the charm of Oriental culture. Star African footballers play in the Chinese super league; Chinese tourists flock to Africa to admire its captivating landscape.

Stories like these are happening every day. We are proud of what we have achieved; and, with ever stronger resolve and determination, we will keep working on to pursue greater win-win cooperation and common development for our peoples.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

We will, bearing in mind the expectation and dreams of the over 1.3 billion Chinese and over 1.2 billion Africans, embark on a new journey and open up new prospects for China-Africa relations.

We are determined to jointly build an even closer China-Africa community with a shared future and thus contribute to building a community with a shared future for mankind.

We are determined to draw a road map for full implementation of the eight major initiatives jointly adopted to boost China-Africa cooperation and work together to promote the Belt and Road Initiative through consultation and cooperation to deliver shared benefits for both sides.

We are determined to work together and contribute our strength and wisdom to greater solidarity and cooperation among developing countries and to remain the strong force for world peace and development.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

As an African proverb goes, “A single bracelet does not jingle.” We in China have a saying, “When people are of one mind, they can even move the towering Mount Tai.”To create a brighter future for China-Africa cooperation calls for the concerted efforts of all members of the big China-Africa family. Now that we are standing at this new and higher starting point, China will work with African countries and make down-to-earth efforts to deliver on the commitments we have made. Together, let us write down a new chapter in history of a better life for the Chinese and African peoples and an even brighter future for China-Africa friendship.
